Sideways clearance
Safety at Street Works and Road Works, A Code of Practice, published by Department for Transport in October 2013, defines sideways clearance (S) as: ‘the part of the safety zone between the working space and moving traffic.’
Where the safety zone is the: ‘additional space around the working space to ensure the safety of the workforce and highway users.’
